The week before a Slam is normally a quiet one where unheralded players can get attention and possibly win a title. Normally, this is WTA only but the ATP had 2 finals where 3 qualifiers were involved and the title winners were the ATP qualifiers. The final in Sydney was the first one where the finalist both came from the qualifications.
Now, my player of the week is Heather Watson, who won all of her matches in straight sets. On the way to the title, she defeated Magdalena Rybarikova, Sloane Stephens, Roberta Vinci, Alison Riske and Madison Brengle.
Honorable mentions
(1) Karolina Pliskova - She made her first career Premier final capped off by winning easily over Angelique Kerber. She has been playing well since the United States Open making 4 finals winning 2 titles in the process.
(2) Madison Brengle - She won seven matches since qualifying started to make the finals. In her four main draw wins, she had to win 3 three set matches and in the fourth one, she won a second set tiebreak.
(3) Petra Kvitova - She won the title at Sydney. She will be trying to do what Victoria Azarenka did in 2012 by winning Sydney and Australian Open. In her 4 matches, she had a three setter against Jarmila Gajdosova and in the other three, she had at least one 7-5 or 7-6 set.
